1. What the Class A Results Cover

Tested Assembly Scope

The ASTM E84-26a testing was conducted on the complete tested assembly configurations of SeamlessMoss SM-200 and FlexMoss FM-150, including the preserved moss and the corresponding backing as part of each system.

The Class A results therefore apply to the tested SM-200 and FM-150 assemblies as a whole, not to preserved moss or PET/felt backing tested separately.

ASTM E84 reports two key values:

  • Flame Spread Index (FSI): indicates the relative rate of flame spread across the tested surface.

  • Smoke Developed Index (SDI): indicates the relative amount of smoke developed during the test.

For a Class A surface-burning classification:

  • FSI: 0–25

  • SDI: 0–450

The classification applies to the specific assembly tested, so the applicable laboratory report should be reviewed when evaluating a system for a project.

  • Class A fire-performance documentation is commonly requested in commercial projects where interior finish materials are reviewed as part of the specification, submittal, or code approval process. This is especially relevant for projects such as workplaces, education, healthcare, hospitality, retail, fitness, and other public or high-occupancy interiors. The final requirement depends on the project specification, applicable code, and authority having jurisdiction.

  • Fire-performance requirements are often considered more closely in lobbies, reception areas, corridors, common areas, amenity spaces, large feature walls, and other highly visible or frequently occupied interior spaces. Not every location in a project is necessarily reviewed the same way. The applicable requirement should be confirmed based on the specific installation location and project criteria.
